I was taking Kristen and Richard’s photo without Nathan but he didn’t want to stay behind me. When he decided to pop through my legs, I snapped a photo and locked him between my legs to keep him out of the way. We ended up falling over on the ground. He thought it was hilarious.
Mandie and her family invited me into their home last month to photograph their newest addition, Maxson. He reminded me a lot of my own son as a newborn, wanting to nurse, nurse, nurse, whenever Mama was close! We relaxed around the house letting him choose when he was ready for me. Photographing newborns takes a whole lot of patience – good thing they’re my favorite subjects.

My children are so blessed to have a relationship with almost all of their Great Grandparents.

I was asked on formspring if I was going to share about my experience birthing Adelaide at home instead of at a hospital. Without getting into a home vs hospital debate, I want to say that Lucas’ hospital birth was one of the most traumatic events I’d experienced up until that point in my life. It was horrible. Having Adelaide at home in my bedroom was incredible. There just isn’t a way to describe the homebirth experience unless you have done it yourself or maybe a slight understanding if you have attended one. So for ME (many people are just fine with how hospital births are handled) my homebirth gave me back as a woman what I felt was taken from me with my hospital birth. My Midwife took this photo of my husband and I with Adelaide moments after getting out of the birthing tub. Laying in my own bed.

If you are planning to birth at home, or even toying with the idea and wish for more information and first hand advice from my own experience, I am more than willing to answer your questions. As openly and honestly as I can. You can either hit me up on formspring if you’d rather remain anonymous, or email me directly. I also whole-heartedly recommend The Business of Being Born documentary. It is also available for instant streaming if you have Netflix. Love!
When I was contacted by this family to take photos before Dad’s deployment (tomorrow), I couldn’t say no. Maternity leave or not. And serious props to Mom, who is going to be caring for those three adorable boys for a whole year on her own. You women are stronger than me. ♥
