When I was contacted by this family to take photos before Dad’s deployment (tomorrow), I couldn’t say no. Maternity leave or not. And serious props to Mom, who is going to be caring for those three adorable boys for a whole year on her own. You women are stronger than me. ♥

Redefining Beauty

October 24, 2009

If you have been following my blog over the past two years or so, you may recognize Jackson. And even if you haven’t, just look up at my blog header – he is featured front and center. Photographing Jackson for the first time was no easy task. The second time wasn’t a walk in the park, either. We tried all the tricks in the book to achieve some eye contact and interaction but he was just not wanting anything to do with me and my camera. Then his mom, Kelly, turned on his favorite song and his eyes just lit up and that was it for me. I couldn’t help but be captivated by his enthusiastic clapping and his tiny body bobbing up and down in time with the rhythm of the music. I fell in love and all the frustration and self-defeat I felt prior to that moment just melted away. It was beautiful. Jackson is beautiful.

Jackson has what is called Subtelomeric Deletion Syndrome. It is a genetic disorder that causes Autism, developmental delay, epilepsy, and a whole other array of different challenges that he and his family face each day. Kelly recently entered Jackson in The Gap Casting Call and when I saw this, I knew I had to do everything in my power to support them. While it’s true that my reach on the internet is limited, I am hoping to cause a chain reaction and heartily encourage everybody who reads this to not only cast a vote (or multiple votes if you feel so inclined – you can vote once daily) but to share this entry with everybody you know. Many of my friends and acquaintances have entered their children into this popular contest, but I can think of no child better suited for the lime light than Jackson. A quick note from his wonderful Mama, the photo she took for the contest (professional images not allowed) and some home snapshots of this handsome little man:

I decided to enter Jackson into the GAP contest to see if we could make a change in the way we look at beauty. It shouldnt matter if you’re in a wheelchair, if you can’t talk, or if you can walk. Beauty should be what you see in the eyes of the person you are looking at. You should be able to see past the disability and see the person as beautiful no matter what!

If you have a moment, please vote for Jackson by clicking HERE. And send this to your friends, too. Because really, how can you deny this sweet face?

Think Pink Photography | Breast Cancer Awareness

While the month of October often brings thoughts of pumpkins, costumes, and candies to the minds of most people, it holds a whole other meaning to me. As a long time supporter of the Breast Cancer Awareness cause, October is a month of pink in my heart. It was a no brainer to join forces with Think Pink Photography when I found out about their organization and I am so proud to be one of their Network Photographers.

Think Pink Photography was founded in October 2007 to support individuals and their families who have been touched by breast cancer. We are a charitable organization that serves two main purposes – celebrating life and supporting the cause.

All funds generated through donations and various fundraising efforts are paid directly to The Eric R. Beverly Family Foundation. As a 3-time breast cancer survivor, Danielle Beverly and her husband Eric joined together to form a foundation dedicated to promoting education, increasing awareness, and providing support and resources for families who have been touched by breast cancer. The Foundation focuses on providing financial support for the chemotherapy and mammography needs of uninsured or underinsured individuals; establishing social and psychological support programs for individuals facing breast cancer, their caregivers and children; and fostering opportunities for individuals to educate themselves and others about the life and death importance of early detection.

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, any Think Pink Session scheduled in October will receive a gift from me – a complimentary pink 3×3 mini brag book album containing photos from your session. This is in addition to the items already included in my Think Pink Sessions:

  • Complimentary portrait session
  • Ten 5×7 photographs from your Think Pink Session
  • 10% discount on any additional prints ordered

Any individual that has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer or completed treatment within the past 12 months qualifies for a Think Pink Session. Sessions are available to document the fight before or during treatment or to celebrate the victory when treatment is completed.

Even if you have been fortunate enough to have not been touched by Breast Cancer, you can still support the cause. During the month of October, for every single regular session booked, a donation will be made by me to a Breast Cancer Foundation of your choice. And when October is over? Continue to mention if you found me through the Think Pink Photographer Network, and the I will make a donation to their foundation.
